TOP 5: ICONIC SPRAY PAINTS

Cans with a history.

The most popular and iconic tool for graffiti artists is the spray can! There is a large selection of companies offering their products to writers and artists, with each having their own unique history in relation to the graffiti movement. We compiled our TOP 5 Iconic Spray Paints here.

Rust-O-leum

Founded in 1921, Rust-Oleum was started by Sea Captain Robert Fergusson, after he noticed that he could use fish oil to prevent rust from spreading. His company was then also one of the first companies producing spray paint on larger scales - and thus, Rust-Oleum spray paint was probably the first spray paint used by graffiti artists in the United States. Nowadays, it is barely used in fine arts and graffiti, since there are better options available. But Rust-Oleum still has its place in the heart of graffiti artists as the OG spraypaint of the early days.

Sparvar - Tuff Color

“Tuff Color” cans by Sparvar are advertised as the world's first graffiti spray can and were originally created in cooperation with Ben “Wildstyle” Mansour, who was the owner of germany's first graffiti shop. There, he was selling regular Sparvar cans and thus became one of the biggest retailers for this company. Soon, the company became aware of this new market: They approached Ben and asked if he wanted to create a new can with them, aligned for the needs of graffiti writers - which later became known as Sparvars “Tuff Color”!

Molotow

This german family business was founded in 1959 by Wilhelm Feuerstein, but only when his son Jürgen took over the company, they started to dive more and more into the graffiti spray can business: As a local DJ, Jürgen made contact with the local graffiti scene, and decided to develop spray cans that are optimized for graffiti writing. These spray cans were a huge success - and today, the company is fully specialized on graffiti products.

Montana

Montana is another Germany-based company well known for spray cans. In 1995, the two graffiti artists Rüdiger Glatz and Tim Latif founded a small business and sold remaining stocks and second quality cans, mainly to support their own use of spray cans. Montana Colors from Barcelona soon became aware of this, and in collaboration with the german artists, they started Montana Cans. Today Montana Colors and Montana Colors are divided companys but because of Glatzs´ and Latifs´ experience as writers, their cans were perfectly tailored for the needs of writers - and are known today as one of the best quality product on the market.

Loop Colors

Loop Colors was founded 30 years in Italy. But despite years of company history and expertise are still somehow the newcomer in our list. But for many writers today the cans of Loop become a real alternative: great color palette, high pigment quality, love for the needs of graffiti artists.Sure, Loop Colors is still a bit away from the reputation and spread of the other can classics but on the way there.
